Urban Learning Center & Summer Spot Program

Education is a primary focus of Hospitality House programming. Designated a Minneapolis School District Area Learning Center in October of 2000, we operate after-school and summer-school programs open to all youth, but targeted at those behind in school (40% or lower on standardized testing).

Our Minneapolis School District Learning Center operates year-round as:

Urban Learning Center

Summer Spot
June 21 - July 29, 2005
Monday - Friday, 12:30 pm - 5 pm

The Summer Spot program includes outdoor fun, gardening, fishing, walking, softball, field trips, character building, arts and life skills. The program also includes Educational Enrichment (math, reading and writing).

The goal of the Urban Learning Center is to foster a safe, enriching, and positive environment for kids K-12 while providing opportunities for educational enrichment. The program promotes academic achievement, social skills, and personal development for each student. A back-to-the-basics approach to academics focuses on reading, writing, and mathematics. Social skills are enhanced through training in relationship building. Personal development is promoted through the study of behavioral management and character building.

Utilizing software from the Computer Curriculum Corporation, each student has an individualized learning plan based on his or her basic skills. Students are evaluated based on their grade-level comprehension of reading and math. College and Life Skills teaches students a life management formula designed to increase the understanding of the relationship between higher education and life. This program teaches students how education—a single life component—influences their ability to succeed in their personal, interpersonal, career, financial, intellectual, environmental, and spiritual lives. An extensive assessment battery is used to identify student needs and to tailor the 15 hours of classroom instruction. Certificates of Achievement and Completion along with a Performance Report are provided to students who complete the program.

162 students were assessed for basic skills improvement through the Computer Curriculum Corporation program in the education department. During the average 2.5 hours spent in the computer lab each week, students participate in math and reading activities and tests. The average improvement in grade level is 1 month for every 1 month of participation. This means that the 10-12 hours spent after school each month is translating into 1 month of academic improvement.
